In this day and age there are actually a wide range of vacation possibilities. Travelers can now go on safari trips, cruises or other types of specialty getaways, but there are many others. This becomes a potentially contentious decision when the entire family is involved. One person going on a trip can often get a special deal. Two people can also get a good deal in many cases, especially with package deals. But that no longer applies when it is a family hunting for a discount. It is assumed that families have children and that children are noisy.

Quite frequently, resorts would charge a premium on families with children, and would give the reason that they would need to cater to the children’s needs, may it be kids’ meals, kiddie entertainment, amusement facilities or whatnot. Some resorts actually do go to great lengths and substantial costs to accommodate these young guests. Some of the services they offer children would be daycare facilities, children’s entertainment, and since a lot of children are fussy eaters, they may serve special kiddie menus.

These last few years have seen massive changes in the vacation market. There are new options available for families that wish to vacation together that do not require huge infusions of cash. It’s a new market and it represents a complete shift in the way we think about our vacation time.

Timeshares, all inclusive resorts, and villa rentals now have to compete with destination clubs, exchange programs, points programs, a wholesale vacation market, and what is now a hugely competitive cottage rental real-estate market. Are you aware that you can now rent a cottage and file it under one of the many “all inclusive” deals? This was not possible 10 years ago but it is now.

But what really matters if you are having a family vacation is preparedness – there are several things you must consider, namely:

What happens if you are hurt while on vacation? Is there liability coverage in the unlikely event that it is needed?
Once you book or reserve something, are you sure to have it at the time of travel?
What options have you if you are not satisfied with your booking? Refunds, perchance?
Do you have to pay any secret costs (boats, groceries, incidentals) that may or may not be included in the basic rental agreement?
